The psychology of judgment, decision making, and communication can complicate negotiation. This session discusses the psychology of predictions, anchoring, and evaluating options, and the implications for mediation. The psychology of mediation via remote platforms will also be discussed.

Ethical lapses can occur more easily and less intentionally than we might think. The psychology involved is useful in thinking about a mediator’s own ethical obligations as well as how it can influence the decisions and behavior of the advocates and parties with whom they work.

How can you pitch your mediation business in a way that resonates with prospective consumers of mediation? How can you effectively promote yourself and your mediation practice in the marketplace? Dr. Schaefer’s workshop will assist you to develop an impactful marketing message. You can’t make an impact in the mediation world if you aren’t getting opportunities to mediate.

About Our Presenters

Professor Jennifer K. Robbennolt, MA, JD, PhD
Professor Robbennolt is an award winning researcher and professor in law and psychology at the University of Illinois. She is an expert in the area of psychology and law, torts, and disputes resolution. She is co-author of Psychology for Lawyers: Understanding the Human Factors In Negotiation, Litigation, and Decision Making (American Bar Association 2021). She earned her law degree and doctoral degree in social psychology from the University of Nebraska. She is a former senior fellow in the Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri Columbia School of Law.
Professor Robbennolt is an award winning researcher and professor in law and psychology at the University of Illinois. Dr. Zach Schaefer
Dr. Zach Schaefer is a retired tenured professor in organizational communication at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He is CEO of Spark the Discussion, working with more than 350 companies to create clarity and catalyze behavior change. An experienced mediator and former AMM board member, he also conducts executive facilitations to help CEOs work though disagreements. He is also the author of five books and owner of The Post Sports Bar & Grill, with four locations in St. Louis. His website is www.sparkthediscussion.com.
